Turning concern into action

The St Vincent de Paul Society is an international Christian charity which befriends those in need, and provides them with practical assistance – social or financial. It has been established in England and Wales since 1844 and there are currently over 10,000 members involved in its work.

Churches working together

The SVP at Holy Cross and Ss Philip & James Churches are working together to support isolated and vulnerable people in Bedford, by telephone or face-to-face visits in their homes, in care homes or hospital visits where necessary.  We can supply vital items of shopping, collect prescriptions from the chemist, carry out minor DIY or gardening, or give lifts to appointments.

Providing for the homeless and vulnerable

We also help with the Soup Run in Bedford town centre, to provide food, sandwiches, hot drinks and other treats for the homeless or vulnerable.

St. Vincent's

St. Vincent’s is a friendly group for people who enjoy meeting up each week for a chat and a laugh. It is run by members of the SVP and is open to anyone.

A light lunch is provided with plenty of tea and coffee. As well as quizzes and games, people enjoy a variety of entertainment. There are occasional guest speakers which have included the Fire Service, Bedford Foodbank, the Royal British Legion, Guide Dogs, Bedford Beekeepers and the Library Service to name but a few. Additionally, there has been a variety of entertainment, including a local choir, sing-alongs and the Sandy Ukulele Group where people have really enjoyed listening to the music and joining in with their favourites.

St. Vincent’s is open from 1.00 p.m. – 3.30 p.m. each Tuesday and all are welcome. This is a group where new friendships have been made and developed.
